A stalwart of Lanarkshire’s Lithuanian community has died just days after celebrating her 90th birthday.

Retired maths teacher Cathy Blue was treasurer of the Lithuanian Social Club in Mossend for many years.

Cathy, of Carfin Street, New Stevenston, and late husband Joe were ‘tremendous’ workers for the community, said Bellshill councillor Harry Curran.

Councillor Curran, the club’s present treasurer, said: “Cathy was very good - her books were meticulous. Her commitment to the club was such that she was serving in the bar when she was in her 80s.”

Cathy, who died after a short illness, taught at Elmwood School in Bothwell and Cardinal Newman High School in Bellshill.

Her funeral will be at Holy Family Church, Mossend, on Tuesday, January 20, at noon.
