Two in court after ‘attack’

Two men have appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court in connection with the alleged attempted murder of a man in Newarthill.

The Times reported last week that James Martin was rushed to hospital after allegedly being attacked on Sunday, February 1.

His plight was reported by media outlets throughout the UK after his wife uploaded pictures and updates from the hospital on her Facebook account.

Graham Murray (29) and Grant Murray (19), both of Motherwell, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday (February 6).

Graham faces charges of assault to severe injury, danger of life and attempted murder. He made no plea or declaration.

Grant appeared charged with assault to severe injury, danger of life and attempted murder, assault and breach of the peace. He made no plea or declaration.

Both men were committed for further examination and remanded in custody, and are due to appear in court again on Friday (February 13).

A third individual was also reported but did not appear in court.

A Crown Office spokesperson explained: ”The Procurator Fiscal received a report concerning a 24-year-old man in connection with an incident said to have occurred in Motherwell on 1 February 2015.

“After full and careful consideration of the facts and circumstances of the report, the accused was liberated from custody and did not appear in court in relation to this incident..

“The case remains under consideration by the Procurator Fiscal.”
