Heartless thieves smashed up outdoor collection boxes in the grounds of Carfin Grotto and made off with the cash over the weekend.

Police are investigating the raid at the pilgrimage centre, during which specialist gardening equipment was also taken.

The incident is said to have occurred sometime between 3pm on Friday (November 21) and 10am on Monday (November 24).

The culprits forced the locks on several sheds, making off with petrol lawn mowers, hedge trimmers and strimmers.

Police say the items, which have been security marked and are used by the Scottish Training Foundation - are worth around £1,400.

Witnesses or anyone with information is urged to call Police Scotland on 101 or Crimestoppers free and confidentially on 0800 555 111.
