Men jailed on weapons charges

Two men have been locked up after weapons were brandished during a confrontation in Motherwell.

Derek Valentine (17), a prisoner, was given 21 months detention at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

He admitted trying to start a fight in Watson Street on May 30 and possessing an offensive weapon.

The court heard Valentine was seen on CCTV brandishing a baseball bat. At one point he had a balaclava over his head and was waving a knife about.

Matthew Currie (23), of Shields Tower, Motherwell, was jailed for 15 months. He admitted behaving in a threatening manner and brandishing a knife.

Two other men who appeared with them had their not guilty pleas accepted.
