Hospital staff describe his condition as serious, but stable. The driver of the Volkswagen Up was uninjured.

PC Simon Reilly from the Divisional Road Policing Unit in Motherwell said: “A number of people were in the area when the incident happened, and although we have spoken to some of them, we are keen to trace the others.

“In particular there was an off duty doctor we believe stopped to help, and we would be keen to speak to them.

“We would urge any witnesses, or anyone with information that may assist our investigation to contact the Road Policing Unit in Motherwell through 101, quoting reference number 2383 of Tuesday 6 February 2018.”
