A man stabbed his former girlfriend in Motherwell just weeks after a court order was made for him to keep away from her.
Gary McSpadden (45) was jailed for two years at Hamilton Sheriff Court last week. He admitted grabbing Anne Brown, threatening to kill her and striking her on the body with a knife.
The attack happened at a flat in Windmillhill Street on August 11 this year. Although Ms Brown will be left with a scar, the injury wasn’t deemed ‘severe’.
The court heard McSpadden had been given bail on June 30 with a special condition to stay away from the victim and the Windmillhill Street address.
However, defence agent Diarmid Bruce said Ms Brown had been ‘quite happy’ for her ex to ignore the court order.
On the day of the stabbing they had been drinking and taking drugs. McSpadden had fallen asleep then Ms Brown ordered him to leave. That was when he turned violent.
Mr Bruce said McSpadden has a record and described him as an alcoholic. He added: “Previous assaults have been relatively minor, but this one is a step up for him.
“He gave instructions to plead guilty at an early stage.”
