A Motherwell firm of solicitors was the fourth highest legal aid earner in Scotland last year.

Bruce the Lawyers was paid £1.3 million, an 11 per cent increase on its 2014/15 figure.

It moved up three places from seventh in the table of top earners published by the Scottish Legal Aid Board.

The firm, known for its sponsorship of boxing, works exclusively in criminal defence.

Director Diarmid Bruce said: “We are proud to be the biggest criminal legal aid firm in the west of Scotland.

“People see how hard we try to secure a favourable outcome for every client we represent.”
