NORTH Lanarkshire Council has chosen Bellshill as the site for its new £400,000 salt barn.
Following the terrible weather of the last two winters the council decided it required a new storage facility for up to an additional 10,000 tonnes of road salt.
The council’s two existing salt depots are in Cumbernauld and Bargeddie and it was decided to build a new facility at the council’s transport depot on Philip Murray Road to offer better access to the south of the area.
A council spokesman said: “Its location is the main reason we decided to build the new salt barn on Philip Murray Road.
“Not only that, it is also already a council facility and is where we store our gritting lorries anyway, so it just makes sense.”
The tendering process has ended and councillors will consider the bids at a meeting of the planning and transportation committee.
It is hoped the work will start during the summer.
