Council spells out parking fees plan

NORTH Lanarkshire Council is to introduce car park charges and has launched a public consultation on the scheme.

It has already agreed the level of charges, with fees in a short stay car park ranging from 20p to £1 and a full day’s parking in a long stay or park and ride car park also £1.

The move is aimed at helping the council save £55 million over two years and boosting the economy of town centres.

Councillor James Coyle, convener of planning and transportation, said: “The council must address the reduction in public spending and ensure we can continue to deliver vital local services.

“Maintenance of our car parks already costs around £800,000 a year. We have tried to keep the charges to a minimum and believe that £1 per day for commuters or those working in town centres and the same for people spending half a day shopping is reasonable.

“We have reviewed the provision of car parks across North Lanarkshire and assessed where it is most appropriate to create short or long stay car parks.

“This reflects the location of car parks near shopping areas, business premises and public transport, and is designed to encourage people into town centres to shop, while at the same time providing plenty spaces for commuters and people working in our towns.”

The proposals target 63 car parks with more than 4,000 parking spaces in all the main towns in North Lanarkshire.

Members of the public are invited to give their views by June 22.

Full details of the proposals are available at libraries and at the Civic Centre and Dalziel Building in Motherwell.
