A MOTHERWELL social club which was forced to close its doors after racking up debts is back in business thanks to donations from kind-hearted members.

Fir Park Social Club re-opened on Friday night -just four days after it shut. Members provided money out of their own pockets to fund the insurance cover needed for the establishment to operate.

The Times reported last week that the popular Edward Street club had closed after failing to secure a loan from its brewers.

A new committee was formed in April to save the club, which has debts of around £60,000, and they had believed they would receive a £40,000 loan from Heineken.

Club treasurer Alex Farmer explained that an emergency meeting was held to inform members the club would be closing - and that is when the turnaround took place.
