Youngsters took the opportunity to learn about how a company works when they joined the work experience programme at Saltire over the summer.

This summer Saltire Facilities Management in Bellshill decided to implement a work experience programme for children of its employees.

This six-week initiative was to give the youngsters an opportunity to experience the daily tasks and disciplines of the work environment.

They also gained an understanding of what it’s like to establish working relationships with others and to see the different aspects of a company that combine to make a business work successfully.

Ally Blyth, team leader, said:“The work experience program has been a fantastic opportunity for the teenagers in both showing them how different roles come together to make the company run, as well as how some of the skills they are learning at school relate to how a business works.

“It has also been a great experience for myself and the other team leaders, and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed seeing them all grow in confidence and show such an enthusiastic approach to the tasks issued to them.

“The way they integrated into the office is also a great testament to the team spirit of our staff, and we’ll miss having them here, but hopefully we’ll see some of them again next year.”

Lucy Connor (16) from Uddingston added: “I had a pleasant experience at Saltire. All of the staff have been lovely and always helpful and polite and I enjoyed working in the office environment and as part of a team.

“It was interesting to see how the business works and was good to learn how to use software such as Excel and Access as that will help me as I return to school.”
