Motherwell and Wishaw MSP John Pentland has tabled a motion calling on the Scottish Government to get more directly involved in countering the threat to Scotland’s steel industry.
This comes as Tata proposes to sell off its long products division, which includes the Dalzell works in Motherwell, to the Swiss-based Klesch Group
John said: “The proposed sale to Klesch puts the future of the Scottish steel industry in doubt.
“Although the Scottish plants are doing well at the moment, Klesch has a reputation as an asset stripper and there are no guarantees that they won’t transfer the business elsewhere.
“The steel unions are convinced there are other alternatives Tata should explore before considering the sale, and I believe that Tata should fully consult them, which they failed to do before the announcement, and give them time to research and assess all the options.
“I’m calling on the Scottish Government to become more proactively involved in persuading Tata to cooperate with the unions in the attempt to prevent job losses, rather than the response they outlined in parliament, which seems to be telling Scottish Enterprise to be prepared to step in to try to pick up the pieces.”
