Action promise on Shieldmuir

A new bid is to be made to break the seven-year deadlock over eyesore wasteground at Shieldmuir that was planned to be a car park.

Residents have been demanding action on the stalled scheme, as well as a comprehensive clean-up of the overgrown site.

The car park scheme, originally planned as part of the nearby Taylor Wimpey development at Excelsior Street, has been stymied by a dispute over who should pay for maintenance.

The initial plan to create a 100-space car park was replaced by a downsized scheme for just 25, but residents complain two years after this was drawn up they’re still no further forward.

Many drivers who aimed to park at the site while commuting by train are said to be parking their vehicles in the main road, lacking any alternative.

Now North Lanarkshire Council says it’s holding a meeting with the builders and Network Rail in a fresh attempt to finally solve the dispute.

Taylor Wimpey says it is ‘delighted’ by the new initiative, and has also pledged to remove old flagpoles from the site as soon as possible.

The firm says it also aims to review what other general maintenance may be needed at the site.
