S3 Standard Grade RME pupils from Braidhurst visited the Mossend Mosque as part of their Islam unit of work.
They arrived at the mosque in full school uniform, complete with scarves in order to respect Muslim culture and beliefs.
They were given a very warm welcome at the mosque where they were greeted by the Imam who explained the purpose of the mosque and the facilities that it provided to the local and wider Muslim community.
The pupils were then shown the washrooms where Muslims perform the washing ritual and were surprised to learn that Muslims do this before each of the five daily prayers.
Pupils were given a tour of the large prayer hall and the female and children section at the back of the mosque and were then shown classrooms where children go after school in order to learn Islamic studies.
The tour ended back in the main library of the mosque where pupils were treated to crisps and juice and offered the chance to ask questions in relation to Islam.
MUSEUM VISIT: Third year history pupils from Braidhurst enjoyed a recent trip to Summerlee Heritage Centre.
The visit offered an excellent opportunity to further their studies of Changing Life in Scotland during the Industrial Revolution.
Miners’ cottages offered an excellent insight into living conditions between the late 19th century until the 1960s and pupils observed at first hand a coal fire, the wash house and outdoor toilet.
Pupils particularly enjoyed the coal mine tour and gained respect and appreciation for this dangerous but essential industry.
The afternoon was spent experiencing a ride in a tram car and exploring the museum’s impressive exhibition hall. Pupils also had the opportunity to handle artefacts, dress up as a Victorian family and to play Victorian childhood games.
SCHOOL SHOW: Tickets for this year’s school show ‘We Will Rock You’ are now on sale from Ms Campbell at the school, tel 274999.
Rehearsals are going really well thanks to a very talented and enthusiastic cast. The show will take place in the school hall from Wednesday to Friday, June 20-22, starting at 7.30pm.
