A Bellshill restaurant has been named Best Mediterranean Establishment at the third annual Food Awards Scotland.

Omorphia Taverna, which brought a little corner of Greece to Main Street two years, picked up the accolade at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow.

Over 300 people attended the awards, hosted by radio personality Gina McKie, which celebrate and reward the very best in the Scottish food industry, with a total of 27 trophies up for grabs for everyone from restaurants and takeaways to retailers and suppliers.

Based on a public vote, the awards commend the talented individuals and businesses dedicated in delivering constant professionalism, amazing service and fantastic food to their customers.

Irfan Younis, of event organisers Creative Oceanic, said: “This is the third time that this ceremony has taken place in Scotland and it was amazing to see so many people come out to support the nominees.

“The food industry is showing great signs of growth in Scotland, with some amazing food places being opened throughout Scotland.

“ Congratulations to all the finalists and winners.”

Omorphia means beauty’ in Greek and owner Dmitri Stafylarakis and his family put in over nine months of hard work to create a stunning restaurant designed to resemble a traditional Greek taverna.

They did everything from the brickwork to the furniture, but the traditional aspect of the business didn’t stop with the decor with a menu made up of recipes handed down from Dmitri’s mother.

Dmitri said: “We are absolutely ecstatic to have won this award, you think once your business is established for a number of years then maybe you might dream about such things, but to receive it after only two years is incredible and we can’t those who nominated us enough.

“We brought our little corner of Greece to Bellshill as strangers, but now we feel like we have so many friends and it is so gratifying to see so many faces coming back again and again.

“When we opened we were determined to work hard to offer the best qualilty food at the best prices and offer the best services and hopefully this is proof we are doing that.

“However, I can promise we won’t be resting on our laurels and will continue to live up the standards we have set ourselves. “
