There were mixed emotions at the Cancer Research UK shop in Bellshill as staff wished volunteer Lucy Walls a happy 80th birthday - and an equally happy retirement.

Lucy took the decision to reluctantly stand down after 20 years’ service at the shop in the town’s Main Street which itself has only been open 24 years.

Manageress Catrina Boxall and her colleagues made a special presentation to her to mark both milestones - and Catrina said that Lucy will be missed.

She said: “Lucy is an absolutely amazing lady. When she first started the till was operated with two fingers and now we have the latest state of the art equipment. She has seen so many changes over the years but has taken them all in her stride.”

Joining Catrina (second left) at the presentation to Lucy are volunteers Joan Mitchell (left) and Lena Cullen.

The shop will be holding a bridal fair next week, from Monday, March 10, until Saturday, March 15.

In stock are a range of oufits from wedding dresses, mother-of-the-bride outfits and children’s outfits to kilts and hats. Special fittings outwith normal opening hours can be arranged.
