OVER 40 young people gathered to celebrate the first anniversary of Newarthill Youth Group.

Organised by a team of 14 volunteers, the group runs every Sunday night from 6 to 8pm in Newarthill Community Education Centre during school term time and is open to all young people from P6 to S6.

The group received a grant from the National Lottery’s Awards For All scheme which allowed funding to provide different programmes and activities for young people.

Speaking on the success of the first year, Lisa Hunter, committee secretary, said: “We’ve around 60 regular members who attend the group. It’s proved really popular with young people. They have an opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities such as arts and craft, fitness, dance, music workshops and much more.”

The group is supported by North Lanarkshire Council’s community learning and development section which provides training, advice and support on funding.

Sean Hanlon, CL&D worker, said: “Every Sunday, the volunteers give up their time to provide activities for young people.

“They have weekends and evenings away from their families to undertake training and plan for the group. They have achieved so much last year.”
