Fair Trade friendship in aid of Malawi kids

KIRKHILL Primary pupils extended a hand of friendship all the way to Malawi last Friday for their Global Charity Day.

Big-hearted youngsters from the school’s eco committee planned an Fair Trade pop-up event to raise funds for the Betty Cunningham International Trust, working to build classrooms and feed children in the Kaponda community.

Ross Calderhead, one of Kirkhill’s P7 committee members, explained: “It makes us realse how lucky we are. Lots of us have everything we need and more and we just take it for granted.

“Betty Cunningham has been to talk to us about her charity before and it’s something that lots of us wanted to help out with.”

The theme was chosen as Fair Trade Fortnight is approaching, and the enterprising kids sold Fair Trade items — including pocket money toys — to fellow pupils and parents.

Kirkhill head teacher Yvonne Donaldson said: “We are all very proud of the children’s efforts.

“They have raised awareness of two very worthwhile causes while also raising a lot of money to help others who are less fortunate.”
