The Scottish government’s Food Waste campaign roadshow will give advice and tips on how families can cut back on the amount of foodstuffs that are thrown out.

It is estimated that each family wastes one fifth, or £470 worth, annually through discarded food.

The roadshow will feature food waste experts who will answer questions from the public, and there will be free meal planners, storage labels and handy guides on how to shop smarter.

Cabinet secretary for the environment and rural affairs Richard Lochhead said: “If we use up all the food and drink we currently waste, it would cut carbon emmissions that would be equal to taking one in four cars off Scotland’s roads.

“We all waste food without thinking, so we’re encouraging people to head down to the roadshow and learn about the few small changes they can make to cut food waste, save money and help our environment.

“As well as helping people to reduce food waste, the roadshow will show people how to recycle the food they can’t use, by using food waste collection services, or by composting at home where these services aren’t available.

“By reducing the amount of food that ends up in landfill, we’ll be cutting harmful greenhouse gases.”
