East Ren’s trading standards team has warned residents and businesses to be aware of scammers offering to dispose of waste — for a hefty £70.

Police at Giffnock station were alerted recently when a resident paid to have their refuse removed, only to find it in the road — amounting to a case of illegal fly tipping which can be traced back to the householder, and could even result in further action against them.

East Ren police have tweeted dramatic pictures of dumped rubbish blocking local roads, including the A77 and Eaglesham Moor Road.

Inspector Alan Dickson told The Extra: “There have been a couple of incidents recently, including one resident whose waste turned up at Whitelee.

“I would ask residents to make sure any service they use is properly registered. I would also warn never to deal with cold callers.

“Contact East Ren’s cleansing team instead — and if anyone does come to your door cold calling, please get in touch with us.”

East Renfrewshire council’s cleansing team has issued a reminder that civic amenity sites are available in Barrhead and Newton Mearns for residents to dispose of waste safely. An uplift can also be arranged by phone, at a cost of £22.

Councillor Vincent Waters, ERC environment convener, commented: “Using our civic amenity sites or excellent special uplift service helps keep East Renfrewshire a clean place to enjoy.

“Our residents can also be assured that trading standards and the police act together to identigy and take action against rogue traders who try and operate here.”
