Volunteer mums wanted for BabyCafe

A project aimed at supporting new mums with breastfeeding is looking for volunteers willing to share their own experiences.

The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) has teamed up with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde for BabyCafe; a peer support project designed to help mums during the early days of breastfeeding.

Nicola Smith, NCT team leader for East Renfrewshire and the Royal Alexandra Hospital, told The Extra: “The first few weeks and months with a new baby can be challenging, and sometimes mums just need a friendly ear and time to chat.

“The peer support programme will provide drop-in centres, hospital visits and phone line support from other mums — all of whom have themselves breastfed, and who will have had special training in supporting new mums.

“The drop-in centres will also have health visitors on hand, and mums can come to ask for help on a particular issue, or just to socialise.

“Peer supporters will also be visiting the post-natal wards to give support to any mums who feel they need it, to help them feel confident with their feeding before they go home.”

Nicola is on the lookout for volunteers with two hours per week to spare.

To take part, you must have breastfed your own child for at least three months — children are also welcome along for some of the roles
available.

The BabyCafe will be launched later this year following volunteer training — to find out more or for an application form, contact Nicola at [email protected].
