Your last stop before winter

THERE will be an easy guided walk around the RSPB Baron’s Haugh nature reserve in Motherwell on Sunday led by warden Stephen Owen.

He said: “A walk around Baron’s Haugh in late November will be full of interest as we are right on the cusp of winter.

“The woods will still have some beautiful autumn colours and fascinating fungi, Whilst on the wetland areas, impressive numbers of birds will be arriving for the winter.

“In the winter months there can be literally hundreds if not thousands of ducks seeking refuge from the even colder north. It is amazing to think that they spend their summers in far flung places such as Iceland and Greenland, and that for them Scotland is a relatively mild winter home.

“The real stars in winter though are the whooper swans. These huge, elegant birds join the many ducks to pass the winter at the Haugh. There can be up to a hundred of them, and their noisy squabbles certainly live up to their name.”

The walk leaves from the RSPB car park on Manse Road at 1pm and will last for about two hours, with participants advised to wear appropriate clothing and footwear.

It is free, but places are limited so need to be booked in advance by calling Stephen on 07872 814 911 or e-mail
