Stories of migration at Motherwell Heritage Centre

A NEW exhibition telling local residents' stories of their migration experiences has just opened at Motherwell Heritage Centre.

Stories of Migration draws on the experiences of people who have travelled out of and into North Lanarkshire over the past century.

Developed in partnership with community groups and individuals from all over North Lanarkshire, the displays include objects, documents and photographs as well as personal stories and memorabilia.

Visitors can explore the stories, images and objects on display to find out the reasons why people relocated, watch film clips of emigrants embarking on their new lives, listen to personal experiences and read personal accounts of their new lives.

Exhibition curator Jenny Noble, of the council's leisure and learning services, said: "This promises to be a fascinating exhibition for all ages, but children will especially enjoy climbing inside the type of bunk steerage passengers would have slept in during their long ocean voyage, and even smelling the aromas of ships and the sea."

The exhibition runs until the end of March and admission is free.
