Jinky tribute hits right note
THE committee of the Jimmy Johnstone Memorial Fund have started raising funds for a statue of the Celtic legend on the site of the former St Columba's Primary School in Viewpark which Jimmy attended.
Glasgow folk band The Wakes have written and performed a tribute song called 'The Uncrowned King of Football', which was launched at the Derby Inn, Mossend.
The CD will be sold to help fund the statue and to support Motor Neurone Disease charities in Scotland.
The committee's event organiser, Phil Agnew, said: "The song has the full approval of Jinky's family and has already been played at Celtic Park during a recent Old Firm game."
The launch was attended by Jimmy's widow, Agnes, son James and some of the committee, including chairman Jim McCabe and vice-chair Martin McHugh.
Phil said: "The Wakes are all local boys who knew Jimmy but only saw him play via videos. However, they still wanted to do their own tribute to the Viewpark legend that was Jimmy Johnstone."

The Scottish Motor Neurone Disease Association's 20th annual fun run will take place at Strathclyde Park on Sunday, May 11.
Participants can walk, jog or run a four or six-mile course around the loch. Entertainment will be provided by pipers, and there will be refreshments, a variety of stalls and raffles.
A 10 entry fee covers costs in organising the fun run.
