NORTH Lanarkshire Heritage Centre in Motherwell was officially reopened on Friday following the near £100,000 refurbishment to house North Lanarkshire Council’s archive and records repository.

Over 150 people enjoyed an open day at the High Road facility which includes tours of the new archives centre which has documents dating back to the 16th century, children’s activities and talks on how to research local and family histories.

The centrepiece of the event was a showing of the award-winning film ‘The Big Mill’ from 1963, which detailed the production of sheet metal at Colville’s Ravenscraig and Gartcosh Works.

The film, recorded by Colville’s then assistant melting-shop manager and later senior management team member, Tom Urie, shows the making of steel for many uses, including cars, bridges and ships for world-wide markets.

The centre is now running a school-holiday programme for children, full details are available by calling from 01698 274590.
