Bothwell show in full bloom
BOTHWELL Horticultural Society held their annual show in Bothwell Parish Church Centre on Saturday (August 28).
New society president Avril Clark welcomed a large audience to the opening ceremony and spoke about the sad and unexpected death of president Bill Grimmond in June.
Mrs Clark then introduced Emeritus Professor Ross Lorimer who resides in Bothwell, and invited him to open the show.
Professor Lorimer thanked the president and committee for their invitation to open the show.
Being raised in Uddingston, he was delighted to be addressing an audience in Bothwell, especially as his father was a keen gardener and grew vegetables, including many shallots, which to this day he still has an aversion.
Professor Lorimer also praised the society for promoting good horticulture in the community which resulted in a delightful display of flowers and vegetables.
Show secretary Ken Hamilton invited Fiona Lorimer to present the trophies to the main prize-winners as well as to the successful pupils in the school's poster competition.
The society were delighted to receive a new trophy this year. The Brian Sherry Memorial Trophy for photographs was donated by Maria Sherry and awarded for the first time jointly to Lindsay Robertson and George Waterston.
A record number of entries were received this year, and this was particularly evident in the vegetable and photography Sections.
Mrs Lorimer then accepted a bouquet of flowers presented by five-year-old Ellie Gray as a token of thanks from the society.
The official proceedings then came to a close with a vote of thanks to all by society vice-president Morag Smith.
