Bike group gearing up for world record bid
A MOTHERWELL bike group will put their pedal power to the test by trying to break a Guinness World Record – and raise money for a cancer charity in the process.
Greenlink Mountain Bike Club, who operate out of Strathclyde Park, are preparing to take part in the Powering to the Future event which requires participants to generate as much energy as they can through cycling within 24 hours.
The money raised from sponsorship will go to the club and their chosen charity for the year, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.
The event, which will take place between Friday, August 27 and Saturday, August 28, at Coalburn One Stop Shop, is the brainchild of Friends of Volunteering Clydesdale.
The current record of 12,953 watts was set in 2005 and involved people cycling in three eight-hours shifts to power the light bulb.
Twenty-one bikes will run simultaneously throughout a 24-hour period and there will also be a family fun day to keep supporters and spectators entertained.
James Kane, project manager for the event, said: "By showing those taking part how much energy they have to use to make a light bulb light up we hope to make more people aware of energy efficiency."
