VISITORS to North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre in Motherwell were whisked back in time to the Victorian era.

The afternoon of music hall entertainment was held as part of the nationwide Festival of Museums weekend designed to bring families together to celebrate Scotland’s wealth of culture.

The main attraction was a performance by Glasgow-based Britannia Panopticon Music Hall Trust, which is campaigning to restore the oldest music hall in the world.

There was also lots of other fun activities for families to see and do as around 110 people attended the event.

These included playing with Victorian toys and games, painting and making gift boxes, while children and adults could dress up in period costume and have photographs taken as if the (photographic pioneers) Lumiere brothers were behind the camera.

North Lanarkshire Council’s museums learning and access officer Carol Ann Kerr said: “The feedback was very positive.

“Everyone enjoyed the music hall performances by the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall Trust and their singing, comedy, poetry and magic acts made for a very entertaining event.”

The heritage centre is also currently running an exhibition charting the area’s engineering heritage in the 19th and 20th centuries.

‘From Ore to Atom’ is open until June 30 charting the development of the industry and telling the story of the key players from Lanarkshire.
