A CELEBRATION of the arts is under way with the Encounters festival.

The month-long North Lanarkshire Council-led event celebrates all the worlds of music, drama, dance, film and visual art have to offer.

It brings togther the former Words book festival and the Work Youth Arts event to create a larger festival with something for all.

A wide variety of events are taking place at venues such as Bellshill Cultural Centre and the North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre as well as at Motherwell, Cleland, Craigneuk, Newarthill, New Stevenston and Viewpark libraries.

Among the highlights is a session with local author Mark Wilson at Motherwell Library on October 23 at 7pm.

There will also be a taste of Asian culture on offer at Bellshill Cultural Centre with Mushaira on October 12, also at 7pm.

An exhibition entitled ‘In The Pursuit Of Beauty’ will run until October 21, between 10am and 5pm Monday to Saturday at the NL Heritage Centre.

It investigates the concept of human beauty and body image, and covers everything from fashion fads to cosmetic surgery.

For more information on the festival and to view a list of events, visit Encounters website or pick up a brochure in your local library.

Please note that places need to be booked for some events.
