Youth gets heard

Youth employment, transportation concerns, crime, development on the Ravenscraig site, education and sporting opportunities were some of the key issues raised by young people at a special event held in Motherwell.

The Question Time-styled ‘Youth be Heard’ session was organised by Motherwell Youth Voice, the area’s youth forum in partnership with North Lanarkshire Council.

Students from Motherwell College joined pupils from Brannock, Clyde Valley, Braidhurst, Our Lady’s and Dalziel high schools and community youth groups at the innovative session with questions being posed by Twitter and Facebook users.

A panel of decision makers including North Lanarkshire Council’s chief executive Gavin Whitefield, North Lanarkshire Leisure chief executive Blane Dodds, Motherwell and Wishaw area commander Chief Inspector Gregor McKenzie, Motherwell West councillor Michael Ross, Lauren King of the Scottish Youth Parliament and community youth manager Liz Fergus were on hand to answer questions about plans for the area.

The discussions from the event will be used to help shape the way in which the council and partner organisations, such as Strathclyde Police and the voluntary sector, make sure young people get the services they need in the future.
