Infant-astic service for baby health

AN event celebrating the health benefits massage can have for babies was held at the Daisy Park Community Centre in Motherwell.

A Celebration of Infant Massage was organised by North Lanarkshire Council’s Motherwell Locality Homelink staff who worked in partnership with NHS Lanarkshire staff to run an infant massage programme in the area.

The event recognised the achievements of over 70 parents and carers who completed the 5/6 week programme and believed they’ve gained a better understanding of their baby’s unique needs.

The programme is delivered by qualified instructors trained in the International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM).

Baby massage is a key process in developing attachment and bonding between a parent or care giver and their baby up to the age of one.

A parent who attended the programme said “The classes are relaxing and friendly, it was sad when it came to an end. I have recommended it to my friends who have babies.”

The programme is ongoing in the centre and is available free of charge to parents and carers both on Monday afternoons and Tuesday morning.

Such is the benefit, that all new mums are now being invited to baby massage classes by their public health nurse.

For further information call Homelink staff, Michelle Malarkey or Elaine Dewar, on 01698 335780 or NHS health improvement senior Lizzy Hammond on 01698 242649.
