Barons Haugh warden Stephen Owen and the CEMEX staff get ready to create the hedgerows

WORKERS from the CEMEX UK office in Uddingston have been helping to plant over 400 trees at the Baron’s Haugh nature reserve in Motherwell.

They were joined by colleagues from the quarries at Hyndford and Cambusmore as part of the company’s Lendahand scheme which gives employees eight hours paid leave to volunteer for a charity or organization of their own choice.

As previously detailed in the Times & Speaker, RSPB is currently turning over-grown grassland into meadows to offer a more diverse landscape for the wildlife.

The meadow paddocks will be divided into narrow strips with hedgerow and the CEMEX workers got busy planting hawthorn, blackthorn, holly, hazel and wild rose.

This combination of trees will create a wide diversity of habitat offering food and shelter as well as the ability for wildlife to move relatively safely across the meadow.
