Drive to help
raise awareness

A MENTAL health charity is hitting the road as part of a drive to raise awareness of its local service among people in North Lanarkshire.
Working with North Lanarkshire Council and NHS Lanarkshire, the Scottish Association for Mental Health has arranged for local buses to be emblazoned with the details of its information line, Well-Informed.
And the stars of the adverts are none other than the SAMH volunteers who run the service.
A number of Coakley and JMB buses throughout Lanarkshire will carry the SAMH Well-Informed ads, each of which features one of six volunteers from the service.
The service is run by an information officer and 12 part-time volunteers and, funded by North Lanarkshire Council and NHS Lanarkshire, provides information on local and national services that help people maintain their mental health and well-being.
One of the volunteers who is part of the campaign commented: “What an experience to have my picture on the back of a bus.
“I generally don’t do photos but I went ahead to support the information service. I found this to be a great experience, a great laugh, and a great achievement for myself. All the people who I was involved with in making this happen were great.”
Steve Mayes, operations manager at SAMH, said: “We’re really pleased to have the chance to highlight our volunteers’ contribution to the service by giving them a starring role in our adverts.
“They make a massive difference to the service and mean that we can help people to find out what their options are to stay mentally healthy or find a local service.”
Duncan Mackay, the council’s head of social work development, added: “North Lanarkshire Council is pleased to offer continued support to ‘Well Informed’.
“It offers help to people who are looking for ways to improve their own, or other people’s, mental health and wellbeing.
“The new bus advertising campaign using local volunteers not only increases awareness of the service but also helps to reduce stigma and discrimination across North Lanarkshire.”
