LOCAL emergency services have teamed up in a bid to ensure bonfire night goes safely with a bang.
Motherwell and Bellshill residents are being encouraged to leave fireworks to the professionals and attend organised displays.
Representatives of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and Strathclyde Police visited Taylor and Brannock high schools recently to give safety talks to pupils.
It comes after two local youngsters were injured with fireworks in recent weeks, as reported in the Times.
Area Commander John Joyce of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said: “All fireworks are dangerous items and must be carefully handled.
“It is essential that people follow the firework code to ensure they stay safe. Young people, in particular, need to be aware of the potential dangers and tragic consequences that their actions might have.”
Sergeant Ross Aitken, who has responsibility for Carfin and Newarthill, added: “Bonfire night is one of the busiest nights of the year for both the fire service and police, and sadly some fire crews become the victims of mindless violence.
“More fire crews are attacked and assaulted during bonfire night than at any other time of the year, so reckless behaviour will not be tolerated.
“Communities can be reassured that we’ve also been working closely with Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and other partners to tackle the illegal sale of fireworks and illegal bonfires.”
Meanwhile, North Lanarkshire Council is encouraging locals to attend the display at Strathclyde Park tonight (Monday)
There will be a funfair from 5pm with a variety of entertainment and live music before the bonfire is lit at 7.30pm.
